About the Meta Tag Generator

Meta tags are simple enough to write by hand and simple enough to get subtly wrong. This builds the full head block — title, description, robots, canonical, viewport and charset — and shows the character counts as you type so nothing arrives truncated.

Write the title for the person deciding whether to click, not for the crawler. The most useful pattern is the specific thing first, the qualifier second, the brand last, because the end is what gets cut. Descriptions do not influence rankings directly; they influence whether anyone clicks, which is the point.

The canonical field is the one people skip and then regret. If a page is reachable with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters attached, or through both a category path and a direct path, a self-referencing canonical tells search engines which single address holds the signals.

Common questions

Do I need every field filled in?

No — title and description are the ones that matter most. Canonical is worth setting if the page is reachable at more than one URL. Leave anything you're unsure about blank rather than guessing.

Why does the character counter matter?

Google truncates by pixel width rather than character count, but the counter gives a fast approximation. For an exact preview, check the result in the SERP Snippet Preview tool.

Can I use the same description on multiple pages?

You can, but it wastes an opportunity — a unique description written for what that specific page offers earns more clicks than a repeated one, even though duplicate descriptions aren't directly penalised.
