Word Counter

Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading grade.

About the Word Counter

Counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time, and adds a readability score and the most frequent phrases. Everything runs in your browser; the text never leaves the page.

Word count is a weak proxy for quality and a useful proxy for completeness. There is no length that ranks — the useful question is whether the page covers what someone searching that phrase needs, and a 600-word answer that does beats a 2,000-word one that circles.

The readability score is worth a glance for a different reason than most people use it. A very low score on technical writing is fine; a very low score on a page aimed at the general public usually means long sentences rather than hard ideas, and splitting them costs nothing.

Common questions

Is there an ideal word count for SEO?

No fixed number ranks better. The right length is whatever fully answers what someone searching that phrase needs — a focused 600-word answer beats a padded 2,000-word one.

What does the readability score actually measure?

Typically a Flesch-based score estimating how easy the text is to read from sentence and word length. A low score on technical writing is expected; a low score on content meant for a general audience usually means shortening sentences.

Does this tool send my text anywhere?

No — word counting, readability and phrase frequency all run in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted.
