About the Base64 Encoder / Decoder

Encodes and decodes Base64 in your browser, with UTF-8 handled correctly so accented characters and non-Latin scripts survive the round trip.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. It makes binary data safe to put in text — a data URI, an email attachment, a JSON field — and anyone can reverse it in a second. Never use it to hide anything that matters.

A practical note for web work: inlining an image as a Base64 data URI removes one request but makes the file about a third larger and uncacheable, since it now lives inside the HTML or CSS that carries it. It is a reasonable trade for a tiny icon and a bad one for anything above a few kilobytes.

Common questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No — it's an encoding, and it's trivially reversible by anyone. Never use it to hide anything that actually needs to stay private.

Why does encoding text with accented characters sometimes come out wrong?

Base64 operates on bytes, and text needs to be interpreted as UTF-8 first. This tool handles that conversion correctly so accented and non-Latin characters survive the round trip.

Should I inline a Base64 image instead of linking to a file?

Only for very small icons. It removes one HTTP request but makes the asset roughly a third larger and uncacheable on its own, since it becomes part of the HTML or CSS that contains it.
