About the SERP Snippet Preview

Google truncates titles and descriptions by pixel width, not character count. A title full of capital letters is cut far sooner than one of the same length in lowercase, which is why character-count advice gives wrong answers so often. This tool measures the rendered width using the same font metrics the result uses.

Desktop and mobile have different limits, and mobile is the one to design for since that is where most searches happen. Switch between the two tabs and check that the important words survive in both.

One thing worth knowing: Google rewrites the description for a large share of results, choosing text from the page body when it answers the query better than your meta description does. That is not a failure. Write a description that earns the click when it is used, and make sure the body text can stand in when it is not.

Common questions

Why does my title show as cut off even though it's under 60 characters?

Google truncates by pixel width, not character count. A title full of capital letters or wide characters (W, M) reaches the width limit sooner than a lowercase-heavy title of the same character length.

Should I optimise for desktop or mobile width?

Mobile — most searches now happen there, and its width limit is tighter than desktop's, so a title that fits on mobile will almost always fit on desktop too.

Why does my actual Google result show different text than my meta description?

Google rewrites the snippet from the page body for a large share of results when it judges that text answers the query better. That's normal behaviour, not an error in your tags.
